    "The adoption of the Resolution on the Hungarian media law adopted by the Liberal, Socialist, Green and Communist Groups of the European Parliament today is pointless and only serves political purposes. The document ignores the fact that the Hungarian Government has acted in line with the European Commission's proposals and that the Hungarian media law is fully in line with all EU laws, including the Charter of Fundamental Rights", said Simon Busuttil MEP, EPP Group Coordinator in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee of the European Parliament.

    Tamás Deutsch: There are areas where Europe could learn from us

    Our Brussels-based correspondent talked to Mr Tamás Deutsch, Member of the European Parliament (Group of the European People's Party, Fidesz) at the end of a week during which the Hungarian media law was again twice at the centre of attacks. In the meantime, the philosopher Ágnes Heller described the situation in Hungary as a nightmare claiming among other things that during the former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány's reign, the police did not shoot at or torture anyone.

    "The EPP Group in the European Parliament reaffirms its strong commitment to the protection of freedoms and rights, including the freedom of press. At the same time, it rejects all politically motivated accusations against the Hungarian government. The Commission is, rightfully, analysing the conformity of this law to the European legislation. The EPP Group is confident that, should some elements of the Media law have to be changed, Hungary would do so, as Prime Minister Orbán had already declared", said Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.
